General and geography
Abbreviated as TA by abbreviationfinder, Tel Aviv is a large city on the Mediterranean coast of Israel, which, as a cosmopolitan and very modern metropolis, has a special position in many ways.
The origin of the city lies in the southern port city of Jaffa (Yaffa), since 1950 both urban areas have been combined as Tel Aviv-Jaffa. While Tel Aviv itself is shaped by Jews, the old town of Jaffa has Arab roots and oriental influences in many places.
Despite the generally fragile situation in Israel, Tel Aviv is more than ever a figurehead for joie de vivre, lightness and a touch of hip carefree. The popular city beach with its magnificent promenade is just like the many stylish bars of Tel Aviv a magnet for locals and tourists from all over the world.
In addition, the historic capital Jerusalem is only around 50 kilometers away and, together with the Dead Sea, offers an ideal combination option in the country.
With Ben Gurion Airport in Lod, Israel’s largest airport is just a few minutes’ drive outside the city. Numerous airlines offer daily connections from Germany, the flight time from Frankfurt is around four hours.
Climate in Tel Aviv-Jaffa
Tel Aviv has a Mediterranean climate with very long, hot summer months and a short but rather humid winter. Spring and autumn are pleasantly mild and mostly sunny in Tel Aviv. Most of the rain falls between mid- November and mid- March.
As early as February, the average daily temperature often cracks the 20 degrees mark, the Mediterranean Sea on the Tel Aviv coast is usually perfect for swimming from the end of April. Especially between May and September there is extreme drought with usually zero precipitation.
The hottest month in Tel Aviv is August with an average daytime temperature of 31.7 degrees (20 ° C at night), the coolest months are January and February with daytime temperatures around 18 to 19 ° C and night temperatures averaging around 7 degrees.
When is the best time to visit Tel Aviv?
The months of June to September often bring great heat in Tel Aviv and are therefore only partially recommended for cultural trips through Israel. With the refreshment offered by the Mediterranean Sea, summer is still perfect for a relaxing beach holiday.
We recommend the entire period from spring to autumn as the best travel time in Tel Aviv, whereby the region is well suited for a trip even during the humid (but mild) winter with few restrictions. Our favorite months are the peripheral months of May and October.

Landmarks in Tel Aviv
Tel Aviv-Jaffa is not a classic metropolis with hundreds of sights, rather the city itself is its greatest attraction. A must of course is to experience the lively hustle and bustle on Tel Aviv’s dreamy beach. The area not far from the Hilton Hotel is ideal.
In the afternoon, the city’s many street cafes fill up with a young, cosmopolitan crowd. Things are more historical in the “White City”, since 2003 part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The more than 4,000 buildings in the Bauhaus style are the life’s work of a large number of highly talented Jewish architects who fled Germany before National Socialism.
The old town of Jaffa with its small, winding streets is also a must, as well as small studios and interesting shops, for example, the old St. Peter’s Church and the Al-Bahr Mosque. Other attractions in Jaffa include the clock tower, the Jaffa Lighthouse and the Al-Saraya al-‘Atika Palace.
