The population is largely made up of Melanesians. The population density is 18 residents / km². Approximately 42% of the residents are concentrated in the two islands of Guadalcanal and Malaita; migrations between the two islands decreased after the serious clashes that occurred at the end of the 90s of the twentieth century. and reassembled only in 2003 thanks to the intervention of the Australian forces. The remaining population generally lives in villages located on the coast or along the rivers, which often represent the only ways of penetration inland. A certain development has seen the capital Honiara, overlooking the northern coast of the island of Guadalcanal. The remarkable spread of malaria led the government to introduce specific policies with the aim of bringing the incidence of the phenomenon below 80 cases per 1000 residents by 2010.
The most typical vegetation cover is given by the rainforest which covers over three quarters of the territory of the islands and is endangered by uncontrolled deforestation works. The forest and coral reefs, which surround almost all the islands and are heavily damaged, are home to a great variety of species, some of which are endemic. In 1998, UNESCO declared the site of East Rennel, the largest coral atoll to emerge in the world, a World Heritage Site. Protected areas are 0.1% of the national territory.
