Population
The country is mainly inhabited by Serbian populations, with small Albanian, Hungarian, Croatian minorities etc. Kosovo for centuries has attracted migratory currents from the Albanian mountains, so much so that, at the end of the nineteenth century, in its ethnic composition, the Albanians were 77% of the population: this explains the sharp contrasts between Kosovar Albanians and the Serbian government in the eighties and Nineties of the twentieth century and the Albanian request, after the NATO war against Yugoslavia in 1999 which produced a further reduction of the Serbian component in Kosovo, to make the region an independent mono-ethnic state. Vojvodina, on the other hand, is inhabited by Slavic populations originally immigrated starting from the late century. XVII, and not Slavic, among which the Magyar component stands out (German settlers were expelled at the end of World War II). Even between this region and the central government, conflicts broke out between the end of the 1980s and the early 1990s, which resulted in the migration of tens of thousands of Hungarians to neighboring Hungary. The population density is 112 residents per km².
Environment
Rich in mountains, rivers and forests, Serbia is home to numerous plant and animal species. On the lower slopes oak and beech grow, while in the mountainous regions coniferous forests develop. The entire Balkan region is among the most popular European areas for bird watching (eagles, kestrels, hawks, etc.), and bears, wolves and wild boars also live here. Many environmental problems afflicting Serbia derive from the contamination of the territory by depleted uranium present in the NATO missiles used in the bombing during the Kosovo war. The country protects its territory with five national parks, natural parks, special reserves and protected landscapes, for a total of 2.7%.
