General & Geographical Location
Abbreviated as REC by abbreviationfinder, Recife is the capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco and is home to over four million people. This makes Recife the fourth largest metropolis in the country. It is also called Pernambuco by non-Brazilians. The most important urban center of northeast Brazil is partly on the mainland and partly on an island.
Divided by waterways, it is often called the Brazilian Venice. The beautiful natural harbor, surrounded by a coral reef, has modern facilities. Recife exports large quantities of the hinterland’s products, including sugar, cotton and coffee. The majority of the workforce is employed in the service sector. Tourism expanded rapidly in the late 1990s. The city is a transport center with an international airport and good rail and motorway facilities.
The city was founded by the Portuguese in 1548. As a port for the nearby Olinda, the city was settled by fishermen and sailors. The metropolis was sacked by the British in 1595 and prospered by the Dutch (1630-54) under Maurice von Nassau. An Allied air force base was there during World War II.
The city has three universities and several research centers and museums. It has long been famous for its intellectual groups and political ferment. In addition to its modern buildings, Recife has a 17th century cathedral, a Dutch fortress, an ornate government palace and the ruins of the first synagogue in the New World, which flourished during the Dutch era.

The best travel time is outside the rainy season in Recife, so we particularly recommend the travel time from September to February. August also usually offers good conditions and, despite the European school holidays, reasonable prices. The absolute high season in Recife is around Christmas in December and Carnival.
