Geographical location
Short for PUJ by abbreviationfinder, Punta Cana is located on the east coast of the Dominican Republic. The popular vacation destination in the Caribbean is the main tourist center of the Verón district.
The region is known for heavenly beaches and ideal conditions for a beach and bathing holiday. There is no actual town center in Punta Cana, it is rather the widespread name for the long beach area of the town of Bávaro.
The term Punta Cana is based on the Spanish word Punta (for “tip”) and the plants of the Cana palm. The region around Punta Cana has only about 54,000 inhabitants, but it has its own international airport, which is served by countless cities around the world.
Punta Cana can be reached from Frankfurt in around 10 hours by plane.
Climate in Punta Cana
The east coast of the Dominican Republic has a tropical climate. This is characterized by small temperature differences during the year, so there are no classic seasons as we are used to from Europpa. Basically, daytime temperatures between 28 and 31 ° C prevail all year round, and in the midday sun the thermometer easily climbs above 30 degrees.
The warmest months are June to October, but they are also the wetter months in the south and east of the Dominican Republic and are generally in the risk period for hurricanes. The hurricane season in the Caribbean officially runs from early June to November, although experience has shown that most tropical cyclones occur between July and September.
In Punta Cana there is comparatively little rainfall. The rainiest months are May and October, with an average of more than 120 millimeters of precipitation. The classic rainy season from May to October is less pronounced in the region than in the other areas of the Dominican Republic. If it should rain, these are usually short, heavy showers, shortly afterwards it clears up again.
When to go to Punta Cana
Punta Cana is a real year-round destination, as the effects of the rainy season can only be felt to a lesser extent due to the more protected location in the east of the Dominican Republic. The main season lasts from November to April, at this time of travel the humidity is lower than and the temperatures can be tolerated very well. In the border area between the Atlantic and the Caribbean there are year-round bathing water temperatures of warm 26 to 29 degrees.
The European summer holidays create a second main season in the Dominican Republic. However, they are within the stated risk period and are therefore not considered the best time to travel to Punta Cana. We have already been to Punta Cana twice during this period (June and September) and except for one cloudy day we had wonderful summer weather. But due to the factors mentioned, we can at least not call this period the best travel time.
