General and geography
Abbreviated as NF by abbreviationfinder, the world-famous Niagara Falls are the largest waterfalls in North America and fall between the sister cities Niagara Falls in the state of New York (USA) and on the other side of the city of the same name in Ontario (Canada).
The best frontal view of Niagara Falls is from the Canadian side, but you can also get an incomparable spectacle from American soil. A small island called Goat Island divides the water masses into two individual waterfalls, namely the American Falls and the impressive Horseshoe Falls with a depth of 52 meters.
Traveling by rental car from New York City takes about 7 hours via Binghamton. There are also various bus and train connections, including from New York and Toronto. The best flight connections are to Buffalo Niagara International Airport, as the nearby Niagara Falls Airport is only served by small charter planes. Alternatively, we recommend Toronto International Airport, from where the journey time is about 90 minutes by car.
Climate at Niagara Falls
The climate in the region of the two sister cities Niagara Falls can be described as rather temperate-cold on both Canada and the USA. Precipitation can be expected throughout the year, which can be expected as snowfall, especially between November and March, when temperatures are often frosty.
The overall climate of Niagara Falls is therefore considered to be a humid continental climate, which is similar to some European regions. It is only from mid- April that the temperatures at the waterfalls are constantly above freezing, even at night. The daytime temperatures then become pleasant from around mid- May, from June to mid- September, there are often even warm summer weather conditions.
When is the best time to visit Niagara Falls?
Basically, Niagara Falls are worth visiting all year round. However, the conditions can be very demanding from late autumn to spring, as icy winds often sweep across the region. As with many attractions in the USA, the warmer summer months are the main tourist season. During the month of May, the number of visitors increases noticeably and reaches its peak from July to August.
Nevertheless, we recommend the summer from June to September as the best time to visit Niagara Falls. However, it is advisable to plan a visit outside of the weekends and to avoid public holidays as much as possible. In this way, the busiest weekends are avoided. Speaking of the “ship”: In summer you should definitely take part in a boat tour (Voyage to the falls) to experience the enormous masses of water from a particularly spectacular perspective!
