Population
Only just over half of the atoll’s residents are Nauruans (69%), the remaining residents are mostly indigenous to other Pacific islands, originally from Kiribati and Tuvalu employed in the mining industry, to which are added Chinese immigrants (2.3%), Filipinos (2.5%) and Europeans. A thousand refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq and Sri Lanka have reached the country since 2001 following Australia’s proposal to relocate illegal asylum seekers to this and other Pacific islands in exchange for monetary compensation, a agreement known as the “Peaceful Solution”. The last refugees left the island in February 2008. The population lives in Yaren and in small towns scattered across the coastal plain. The density is quite high (479 residents / km²), the highest in the continent.

Environment
Only 13.1% of the territory is covered by forests; coconut palms, banana trees, pineapples, pandanus and tropical flowers (hibiscus, frangipani) are present almost exclusively along the coasts. The island is one of the traditional destinations of migratory birds such as frigates, terns and noddy (the little stolid tern, symbol of Nauru). The British, Australian and New Zealand industries, with the indiscriminate exploitation of phosphate resources, have made the central plateau a wasteland dotted with disused plants, once used for the excavation and transport of salt. However, Australia has followed up on the request for compensation made by the Nauru authorities: the country has thus obtained financial compensation and the commitment from Australia to contribute to the rehabilitation and recovery of the environmental heritage. Nauru is also one of the many Pacific islands threatened by rising sea levels due to the greenhouse effect and is facing problems related to the limited availability of water resources. There are no protected areas in the country.
