General & Geography
According to COUNTRYAAH, The Republic of Montenegro in the south of the Adriatic is the smallest republic in the former Yugoslavia, but has earned the status of a real insider tip in recent years due to its considerable natural beauty and diversity.
Montenegro borders on the neighboring states of Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Kosovo and Serbia. The capital and largest city of the country is Podgorica (formerly Titograd).
In terms of tourism, the small state of Montenegro with only around 650,000 inhabitants is increasingly triumphing. Quite rightly, because Montenegro, which was formerly closely linked to Serbia, combines an unbelievable range of attractions in a very small space.
The “land of the black mountains” not only inspires with its rugged plateaus, canyons and lake landscapes, but also picturesque old towns and fantastic pebble and sandy beaches.
The largest tourist center in the country is the Budva Bay, the so-called Budva Riviera region. Other highlights on the coast include the Bay of Kotor, the long sandy beach of Ulcinj and the trendy destination Sveti Stefan.
But the interior is also full of surprises. The Tara Canyon at the National Park Durmitor, the Canyon Nevidio, the Prokletije mountain range, the Skadar Lake and the Ostrog Monastery are all worth seeing.
Exciting new projects are currently the glamorous Marina Montenegro in Tivat with numerous luxury hotels and the construction project on the former prison island Luštica Bay.

Climate in Montenegro
Despite its small national area, Montenegro has enormous climatic differences, which are mainly due to the different altitudes. The Dinaric Mountains appear as a climatic divide and divide the coastal region from the climatic conditions in the eastern part of Montenegro.
In general, the climate on the Adriatic coast can be described as typically Mediterranean. The summer months are dry, sunny and warm to hot. From late autumn to spring, precipitation increases significantly, but temperatures on the coast remain moderate even in winter. The warmest months are July and August.
The water temperatures on the Adriatic usually crack at the beginning of May – the 20 degrees mark and are perceived as pleasantly warm by the end of May at the latest. The sea then usually offers perfect water temperatures for a beach holiday (23 to 27 ° C) until the end of October.
While it is still very warm on the coast in September, the fall winds called “Bora” ensure constant cooling, especially from October. To the east of the coast, including the plain around the capital Podgorica, a continental climate is predominant. At high altitudes, snowfall occurs mainly between December and March.
When is the best time to visit Montenegro?
Montenegro is becoming increasingly popular as a winter travel destination, especially in its new marinas on the coast, but the season generally ends at the end of October at the latest with cooler temperatures and increasing rainfall. Only in April does it get noticeably warmer and many hotels are slowly opening their doors.
We especially recommend the period from May to September as the best time to visit Montenegro. The main season is in the summer months of July and August, when many hotels are booked out well in advance due to the European school holidays. Those who are not dependent on the holidays will find perfect conditions in June and September.
