The average population density is 293 residents / km², among the highest in the continent, and the natural increase rates are high (28.6 ‰ in 2005), thanks to the high birth rate accompanied by a low mortality rate. That of the Marshall Islands is the youngest population on the continent: 42.4% of the Marshalles are under 15 years old. 66.7% of the residents of the atolls live in cities; in fact, only a few islands are inhabited and most of the population resides in the atoll of Majuro, where the capital Dalap-Uliga-Darrit rises, which alone hosts about half of the Marshalles, and in the atoll of Kwajalein, in particular in the locality of Ebeye where the population density exceeds 5,000 residents / km². From the research conducted, particularly negative data emerged regarding the effects that nuclear tests conducted in the past by the Americans have had on the population of the Marshalls. In July 1994, based on documentation from the US Department of Energy, it was found that the natives were deliberately exposed to high levels of radiation, to allow researchers to conduct their own studies on the effects on humans; Further research, conducted by Japanese scholars, revealed that 40% of the former residents of Rongelap Atoll are suffering from cancer. In order to procure the necessary funds to provide for the care of those affected by radiation and to reclaim the contaminated islands, the Marshall authorities have put forward a project regarding the transformation of an atoll.
