Geographical location
The popular island of Mallorca forms an autonomous region of Spain with Cabrera and the so-called Pityuses (Formentera, Ibiza and some uninhabited islands). The group of islands in the western Mediterranean is known collectively as the Baleren.
According to abbreviationfinder, Mallorca is located around 175 kilometers from mainland Spain and is the largest of the Balearic Islands with around 3,600 square kilometers. The extension from east to west is a maximum of 98 kilometers, the maximum width from south to north about 78 kilometers.
Mallorca is framed by two large mountain ranges, of which above all the north-western Serra de Tramuntana has eleven mountains with a height of more than 1000 meters. Palma de Mallorca in the Bay of Palma with around half a million inhabitants is the capital of the island and at the same time the seat of government of the Balearic Islands.
The most popular holiday resorts on the island of Mallorca include Cala Ratjada, Sa Coma, Calla Millor, Alcúdia, Paguera, S’Illot, C’an Picafort, Magaluf and of course the party stronghold S’Arenal.
Climate in Mallorca
Mallorca is characterized by a Mediterranean climate, which, due to regional differences, can be described as temperate to subtropical. The weather is impressive with around 300 days of sunshine throughout the year, with a very mild winter as well as hot summer months. The rain in Mallorca often comes from the north-west and pours in the heights of the Serra de Tramuntana.
The east coast therefore receives noticeably less rainfall. Although the water temperatures are only really suitable for bathing from early summer, the Balearic island is a popular year-round destination, especially for active holidaymakers and those looking for relaxation. In winter, the daytime temperatures are usually between 11 and 17 degrees, on 5 to 6 rainy days you can expect light showers.
The famous almond blossom in the second half of January is particularly beautiful, the peach blossom follows around mid- March and the orange trees are also in full splendor in spring.
When to go to Mallorca
In addition to pleasant daily values and sufficient hours of sunshine, a suitable water temperature is of course important for a beach holiday. As a rule, the weather heralds the bathing season on the island towards the end of May, the water has already reached around 20 degrees and on particularly warm days the thermometer fights its way up to 27 degrees in the shade with almost 10 hours of sunshine.
However, the best time to travel to Mallorca for beach vacationers is from June to September. The days are now long, very sunny and warm. On the other hand, all beaches in the Balearic Islands are usually very well filled in the main season, and hotel and flight prices are of course now higher. Rain is an absolute exception in Mallorca in summer, with a pleasant breeze it rarely gets too hot even in midsummer October.
toocan still bring fantastic weather conditions in warm years, but from the middle of the month more showers can be expected. The winter on the Balearic Island is significantly warmer than on the mainland of Spain. Hikers and active vacationers appreciate the transitional months in autumn and spring, as the “sunny island” is now the most impressive in terms of landscape, hotel prices are noticeably lower and Mallorca is generally much more relaxed.
