According to COUNTRYAAH, East Timor is located on the eastern part of Timor, the largest of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Parallel to the longitudinal axis of Timor rise several mountain ranges cut by deep valleys, which in the Ramelan massif reach 2,963 m above sea level (Tatamailau). Depressions and plateaus lie between the mountain ranges, which are partly interspersed with limestone cliffs rising steeply from the surrounding area.
National symbols
The national flag is described in the 2002 constitution. The red kerchief has a yellow triangle on the leech and a smaller black triangle on top. In the middle of the black triangle is a five-pointed white star.
The coat of arms is a white disc, framed by a light blue ring with the official name of the state in Portuguese and the abbreviation RDTL between two white stars. In the disk, on a 14-rayed sun, lies a black shield, on this the badge of the liberation organization FRETILIN: a gold-rimmed red shield, covered with crossed scimitar sabers in front of a pole-like spear, under the tip of which two arrows cross. A five-pointed star sits on the spear. Under the coat of arms is a red banner with the motto “Honra, Pátria e Povo” (honor, fatherland and people).
The national holiday on November 28th commemorates the proclamation of independence in 1975.
