General & Geography
According to abbreviationfinder, the German Baltic Sea coast is still one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Federal Republic of Germany and is enjoying increasing popularity with great new projects, including among families and younger travelers.
The German Baltic Sea extends over a coastline of almost 2400 kilometers if you add up all the offshore islands and bays. In a westerly direction the Baltic Sea coast extends to the city of Flensburg, in an easterly direction the German coast ends at the border with Poland.
In addition to the sunny island of Fehmarn, the most popular holiday resorts on the German Baltic Sea include the Baltic Sea tip (including Heiligenhafen, Großenbrode, Heringsdorf) and Weissenhäuser Strand, the Bay of Lübeck including Timmendorfer Strand and Scharbeutz, the Kieler Förder (with Laboe), the Eckernförde Bay, the family paradise Damp as well as Stralsund, Rügen and Usedom.
Well-known Baltic baths are also located in Hohwacht, Kellenhusen, Travemünde, Boltenhagen, Rerik, Kühlungsborn and Graal-Müritz. The largest cities on the Baltic Sea are Kiel (state capital of Schleswig-Holstein), Lübeck and the Hanseatic city of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The German Baltic Sea coast not only has a lot to offer culturally, but also meets almost every taste with its maritime flair and an almost endless range of activities. From a family beach holiday to a sporty active holiday to a relaxing cure, nothing is left to be desired.
Climate on the German Baltic Sea
The German Baltic Sea coast is similar to the Danish coast in a temperate maritime climate zone, which is criss-crossed by several milder sub-regions (microclimates). Basically, the constant wind provides cooling, so that the summer months also remain comparatively cool.
Daytime temperatures on the island of Fehmarn, for example, rarely exceed 20 ° C, even in the warmest month of August, and the water temperature rarely climbs above 18 degrees. But especially in connection with the salty air, this so-called “stimulating climate” at the Baltic Sea is very beneficial to health.
There is no classic rainy season on the Baltic Sea, all year round there are 8 to 10 rainy days per month. The amount of rain (e.g. 528mm annually on Fehmarn) is, however, well below most regions in Germany, with an average of 967mm of precipitation in Munich.
The sunniest and warmest months are May to the beginning of September, frost (and snow) is particularly possible between December and March. The situation is similar with the Danish and Polish Baltic coasts.
