The oldest university in the country is University of Zambia which was established in 1966 as an independent institution offering higher education to citizens of the country and those from other countries who wish to pursue studies related to Zambian culture, history and literature. In addition to this, there are several private universities such as Cavendish University; Lusaka Apex Medical University; Zambian Open University among others which offer courses in various disciplines from undergraduate to postgraduate levels.
