It is bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, Israel and Lebanon to the west. Syria enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild winters. Syria’s higher education system consists of 11 public universities located in major cities such as Damascus, Aleppo and Latakia as well as several private universities. The public universities offer degree programs in a wide range of fields from engineering and medicine to business administration, technology and law. Most degree programs are taught in Arabic although some universities offer English-taught courses such as those offered by Damascus University or Aleppo University. There are also a number of foreign universities which have established campuses or joint-degree programs in Syria such as Germany’s Humboldt University of Berlin or France’s Université de Montpellier.
