It has an area of 65,610 square kilometers and is home to more than 21 million people. The country is composed of two major areas: the wet zone in the southwest and the dry zone in the north and east. The elevation ranges from sea level to 2,524 meters at Pidurutalagala, the highest point in Sri Lanka. The country’s climate is tropical and experiences monsoon rains during certain months of the year. Sri Lanka has a well-developed higher education system with numerous universities offering degrees in various fields including engineering, medicine, business administration, technology, law, and more. There are also several polytechnics and institutes which offer vocational qualifications such as nursing or IT diplomas. Most universities offer programs taught in English with some offering degree programs taught entirely in English such as those offered by University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC). Sri Lanka also has a large number of private higher education institutions which are often affiliated with foreign universities or accredited by international accreditation bodies such as ABET or AACSB.
