According to wholevehicles, Botswana is a landlocked country located in Southern Africa, bordered by Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. It is the 48th largest country in the world with a population of just over 2. 2 million people. The climate of Botswana is semi-arid to arid with hot summers and mild winters. The majority of the population lives in rural areas and relies on subsistence farming for their livelihoods. Botswana’s education system is divided into three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary education consists of seven years of schooling beginning at age 7 and ending at age 13. All children are required to attend primary school until they pass their Standard 8 examinations, which are taken at the end of grade 7. Secondary education consists of two years (Forms 1-4) and students must pass their GCE O-Level exams at the end of Form 4 in order to progress to tertiary education. Tertiary education consists of universities, colleges, technical institutes, and private schools offering certificate, diploma, degree programs and apprenticeships. The government has made great strides to improve access to quality education in Botswana with initiatives such as free primary school tuition for all children aged 7-13 as well as free text books for all primary school students since 2010. In addition to this there have been improvements in school infrastructure such as the provision of computers for all secondary schools across Botswana as well as increased funding for teacher training programs which has resulted in an increase in qualified teachers across all levels of education throughout the country. The literacy rate in Botswana has also seen a steady increase over recent years due largely to increased access to quality educational opportunities; according to World Bank estimates it currently stands at 86% which is higher than regional averages throughout sub-Saharan Africa (78%). This demonstrates how far Botswana has come in terms of providing educational opportunities for its citizens despite its relatively small size compared to other countries on the continent.
