Geography
Slovakia borders on Poland in the north, Ukraine in the west, Hungary in the south, Austria in the south-west and the Czech Republic in the west. Most of the country is covered by the Carpathian Mountains with nine national parks. The highest mountain in the Slovak Republic, the Gerlsdorfer Spitze (2,655 m), rises in the High Tatras. Other mighty mountain ranges are z. B. the Low Tatras, the Big and the Little Fatra and the Slovak Ore Mountains.
Beech forests predominate in the foothills, oak and spruce forests in the mountains, and Swiss stone pine and mountain pine at higher altitudes. In addition to many other animal species, wolves, brown bears, chamois and marmots live here. The upper tree line is between 1,450 and 1,500 m. Deciduous forests are characteristic of the broad river plains, e.g. B. from Danube, Váh, Hron and Nitra. Coal-fired power plants have caused significant forest damage over the past few decades.
The climate is temperate continental with regional differences. In the plains, the annual average temperatures are around 10 ° C with annual rainfall of around 500 mm, in the mountains 0 – 3 ° C (total rainfall in the High Tatras 2,000 mm). In the valley of the Hron near Banská Bystrica the mean temperatures are -3.9 ° C in January and 18.2 ° C in July. If the high pressure continues in winter, a temperature reversal often occurs. In the lower elevations of the mountains, the temperatures are colder than on the surrounding heights.
