Geographical location
According to abbreviationfinder, New York is not only the name of the gigantic metropolis New York City, but also denotes an entire state on the northeast coast of the USA.
The so-called Empire State has the third highest population after Texas and California, it is divided by the locals into the two areas Upstate New York (for all places above New York City) and Downstate New York.
New York borders the US states New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Ontario and Québec on the Canadian side. With more than eight million inhabitants, New York City is the most populous city in the United States with the districts Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.
Other cities in the state include Buffalo, Rochester, and Yonkers. In the far west, on the border with Canada, is the city of Niagara Falls, right next to the world-famous Niagara Falls. The distance from Frankfurt to New York City is about 6210 kilometers as the crow flies and takes about 8:45 hours to fly.
Climate in New York
The entire state of New York is in the temperate climate zone. The climate is mainly determined by the continental land masses in the west. New York City has a humid continental climate. The winters are very cold, frosty and sometimes snowy. In addition, an icy wind often sweeps through the streets of New York. The summers can be very warm and sometimes humid with maximum temperatures of up to 40 ° C.
The average annual temperature in New York City is 12 ° C. The warmest month is July with an average of 24 ° C and the coldest month is January with an average of -0.4 ° C. There is no rainy season, the precipitation is spread over the entire year. On the coast, however, spring is more rainy, inland it is more autumn.
In the low mountain range of the Appalachian Mountains, the temperatures are usually cooler, but also drier all year round. The region on Lake Ontario in the northwest also recorded less rain overall than the coastal towns in the state of New York. In recent years there have been more and more record values and extreme weather phenomena, so strong snowstorms are no longer uncommon, especially in winter.
When to go to New York
Basically, New York is easy to travel to all year round, although the winter months from December to early March are often not ideal for exploring because of the heavy snowfall and icy temperatures. From April it will be noticeably friendlier, but it can still be very cold at night. We recommend the summer months from May to October as the best travel time for New York.
Warm temperatures and up to 10 hours of sunshine ensure “t-shirt weather” and let New York shine in the best light. However, it can be in July and August. On particularly hot days, values well above the 30 degree mark come, which heat up even more, especially in the city due to the high-rise buildings and the heavy traffic. Midsummer is therefore not the best time to go if you have cardiovascular problems.
Our favorites are therefore the periods from late April to early July and late August to mid-October.
