Geographical location
According to abbreviationfinder, the Greek island of Mykonos is part of the Cyclades and has been a popular travel destination since the 1960s. The island is also very popular with homosexuals, is considered extremely tolerant and cosmopolitan.
But Mykonos in the southern Aegean is much more than a wild party hotspot and offers a wide range of options that will also delight families and heterosexual couples.
The capital of the island is Mykonos Chora. The city’s landmark are the five windmills on the city harbor. Mykonos is known for beautiful beaches such as Psarou Beach or Paradise Beach. Around 11,000 people live in an area of 105 square kilometers.
Mykonos has its own international airport, which is usually approached from Germany with a stopover in Athens. The island is also connected to the mainland by a ferry. Mykonos’ neighboring islands are Naxos in the south, Delos in the west and Tinos in the north.
Mykonos climate
The climate on Mykonos is very summery and pleasantly warm, especially in the months of June, July, August and September. Temperatures of over 30 degrees make the hearts of many summer vacationers beat faster every year. The precipitation values are very low between May and September. The water temperature cracks the 20 degrees mark from around mid-May and levels off at around 24 ° C from mid-July to the end of September.
In the winter months from October to March, temperatures drop to an average of around 12 degrees, while precipitation increases. Most of the rain falls on Mykonos in November, December and February. The water temperatures are also no longer suitable for swimming in winter, which is why many hotels and clubs close outside the main season.
In late spring and early summer (around April and May) nature is in full bloom after the rainfall on the Cyclades. Due to the intense, hot and dry summer, nature usually looks “burned” from the end of July. Only with the onset of rain from mid-October is the flora on the island slowly revived.
When to go to Mykonos
The main season on Mykonos and the Cyclades (including Santorin, Paros and Naxos) is mainly in July and August. At this time, not only do the temperatures experience absolute highs, but also the number of visitors and overnight prices. In general, we recommend the entire period from the end of May to the end of September as the best travel time for Mykonos. The months are all dry and sunny, the sea has very pleasant water temperatures.
Those who want to avoid the great heat are well served with the edge months of June and September. The travel month of May can already be warm enough, but in some years the weather is not stable enough for a pure beach holiday. From the beginning to the middle of October, the first heavy rains usually set in, but there are usually very good offers at the end of the season.
