Environment
The tropical forest, which still covers 90% of the territory of the States of Micronesia, is characterized by the great variety of plants and flowers such as the hibiscus and the Hong Kong orchid; the forest alternates with grassland and savannah while mangrove swamps abound on the coasts. The local flora includes banana, bread tree and citrus fruits (orange, mandarin) to which coconut palm plantations have been added. The marine areas surrounding the islands are home to a great variety of corals, sponges, anemones and fish: scorpion fish, stingrays, barracudas, groupers, tuna, reef sharks, manta rays. The major environmental problems are linked to past nuclear tests and waste, but they are also due to the climate changes taking place on the planet and pollution. Protected areas cover 0.1% of the territory and include some forest reserves and numerous marine parks. Furthermore, UNESCO has declared Utwe Park in the State of Kosrae a biosphere reserve (2005). In 2006 the UN established the allocation of funds for the protection of biodiversity and marine ecosystems of the Federation of Micronesia, under the Convention on the Environmental Protection of the Pacific Islands ratified in 1988.
