From the Gulf of Guinea to the South, the Ivory Coast goes North up to the Sudanese highlands; it has a not very complex morphology, just as the geological structure is simple. In fact, the country rests on a base of Precambrian rocks (schists, gneisses, quartzites, granites), with a prevalence of granite outcrops in the northern and western regions, and vast schist formations in the south-eastern ones. Finally, the eastern coastal strip has a sedimentary cover from the Cenozoic era, with limited more recent alluvial overlaps. Flat areas and tabular expanses prevail; the prolonged process of erosion has worn out the reliefs everywhere. Three main physical regions can be distinguished: a flat southern belt, which penetrates deeply into the interior and is dominated by various bumps, whose altitude does not exceed 200 m; a central area, with relatively higher isolated peaks (Mount Tiguititi, 604 m) and which to the W is bumpy by the offshoots of the Nimba massif (Mount Tonkoui, 1189 m), extreme eastern stretch of the wide Guinean ridge; finally a northern region of highlands, with an average altitude of 350-500 m, which form vast tabular expanses separated from each other by steep escarpments and also dominated in the western section by granite outcrops (Mount Tiouri, 914 m). The coast, which extends for 550 km, is mostly rocky to the W, given that here the reliefs go as far as the sea, low and sandy to the E, where it has a characteristic series of lagoons up to the border with Ghana (of Ébrié, Aby etc.) that form an almost uninterrupted body of water for almost 350 km.
