Honduras is the second largest country in Isthmian America, but one of the least populated. Widely overlooking the Sea of the Antilles (or the Caribbean), to the S it has only a small outlet on the Pacific Ocean at the innermost part of the Gulf of Fonseca; with Nicaragua has definitively resolved the dispute regarding the possession of the territory of Mosquitia, assigned to Honduras in 1895 and reconfirmed in 1960. Since 1971, the Islas del Cisne, or Swan Islands, in the Sea of the Antilles, already occupied by the States, have also been Honduran United. Its name derives from the Spanish term Hondura, which means “depth”; Columbus, when he arrived on the north coast of the country, believed that the waters were very deep there. In fact, the Islas de la Bahía, off the Caribbean coast, emerge from a depth of over 5000 meters. Having failed to agree on a federal union with neighboring states in the 19th century, subject to exploitation by US companies in the 20th century, Honduras is facing the problems bequeathed by the dictatorial regimes, violation of human rights, crime, poverty, illiteracy, after having finally resolved the dispute with El Salvador over the Pacific Ocean.
